The SmartLaCO2 project is an innovative initiative designed to transform the dairy industry towards a safer, more eco-responsible, and intelligent model. It consists of the research and development of an environmental digital superstructure (an extended digital twin) that enables real-time simulation and optimization of processes such as water reuse, by-product valorization, and energy efficiency. The project involves a consortium of nine entities: two Innovative Business Groups (CLUSAGA and VIRATEC) and seven companies (QUEIZUAR, ASM SOFT, CODE CONTRACT, ISANATUR, CONTACTICA, MEDRAR, and AIRCO2).
Objectives
- Implement industrial IoT in plants to monitor key parameters.
- Develop an AI-based intelligent calculation engine to optimize overall performance.
- Create an optimization model with an environmental superstructure (digital twin).
- Perform real-time dynamic calculation of environmental footprints (carbon and water).
- Implement a blockchain platform to secure environmental traceability.
- Define metrics for the issuance of the Digital Green Passport.
- Integrate insetting and offsetting strategies for holistic climate management.
Impact
The project aims to provide the industry with a tool for the green and digital transition, enabling more efficient and transparent resource management.
Project Consortium
- Food sector company: QUEIZUAR (cheese producer acting as pilot environment).
- Technology companies: ASM SOFT (monitoring and AI platform) and CODE CONTRACT (blockchain specialist).
- Sustainability and innovation companies: MEDRAR (agri-food innovation), CONTACTICA (environmental software and LCA), ISANATUR (by-product valorization), and AIRCO2 (carbon footprint strategies).
- AEI: CLUSAGA (lead applicant) and VIRATEC (environmental solutions and circular economy cluster).
Benefits
The project enables cost and water consumption reduction, valorization of waste into high-value products, improved competitiveness through “Carbon Neutral” certifications and access to premium markets, and stronger regulatory compliance and security through blockchain-based traceability.
Funding
SmartLaCO2 receives funding from the 2025 call of the support program for Innovative Business Groups (AEI) of the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, and is coordinated by the Galicia Food Cluster (Clusaga).
